DAMAGED CURRENCY EXCHANGE

BBAC provides the service of exchanging damaged currency, in line with the Central Bank of Iraq’s regulations.

Banknotes Fit for Circulation

These notes remain valid and can continue to be used:

  • Small tears not exceeding 3 cm, repaired with transparent tape, without affecting features.
  • Cuts in one corner not exceeding 2 cm, without affecting features.
  • Normal signs of circulation and use, without damage affecting appearance, color, or size.

 

Banknotes Accepted for Exchange

Customers can exchange damaged notes at full value if they meet the following conditions:

  • Worn or damaged notes that have not lost parts.
  • Notes composed of two parts (with different numbers) approximating the original size, secured with tape.
  • Notes secured with transparent tape along their length or width.
  • Notes with cuts in more than one corner.
  • Defectively printed notes (design, size, color, or security features).
  • Notes with stamps or writing that do not affect external appearance.
  • Notes that have lost less than 50% of their area.
  • Notes damaged due to burning, burial, or other causes (subject to required documents and verification).

Note: For banknotes damaged due to burning, burial, or other causes, customers may be asked to provide identification, proof of source of funds, or official confirmation depending on the amount and circumstances. A penalty of 10% may apply for damage caused by misuse, burial, or burning.

Banknotes Not Accepted (Confiscated)

The following cannot be exchanged and will be confiscated:

  • Notes altered in appearance (writing, drawing, printing, stamps, adhesive material).
  • Notes missing 50% or more of their area, unless proven destroyed (partial/full compensation may be considered).
  • Counterfeit notes (confiscated and reported; holders receive a receipt).
  • Notes altered to resemble genuine ones by joining counterfeit parts.
  • Perforated notes (e.g., four holes from cancelled Mosul branch notes).

Note: Final decisions on compensation are subject to the Central Bank of Iraq’s evaluation and verification of documents.
